How to Setup Laravel 4

As you may know, here at Nettuts+, we’ve covered the popular Laravel framework a great deal. With version 4 on the near horizon, I’ve received quite a few emails and comments, requesting a screencast that describes exactly how to clone and work with the alpha version of Laravel 4. Here ya go!

  • Laravel comes with app folders not protected , so we should add .htaccess file to every folder expect public folder .

  • You have to clone the git repository, or download the zip as I did, then run 'composer install'. Composer just downloads and installs the dependencies of Laravel. Primarily the autoload vendor files.

  • How did you install PHP4? I compiled it from source but I don't know how to enable Mcrypt extension.

  • I guess h-t-t-p-s://github.com/laravel/framework is the new location for laravel 4. However, in this git repository, there exists no public directory. After running composer install, there still is no public directory.

In the docs, h-t-t-p-:// four.laravel.com/docs/installation, they mention an app direcotry. That also doesn't exist…

The only folders I have after running "composer install" are:

    build
    src
    tests
    vender

I didn't get any errors. What am I doing wrong?

  • If you watch closely you can see that "install for windows" or what title on the install page of composer. It is pretty easy to do on windows as well btw.

The composer installer compies files to the right place, and sets the path.
for git you only need to download git, and install.

Now you can clone, and do the composer install as well.

Artisan can be called e.g. php artisan (if paths for php are not set).

Everything else is exatly the same.

  • When you first install L4, it might throw an exception telling that permission denied on /app/storage/meta/services.json. You have to give write permissions to /app/storage directory.
